No, not because we needed to celebrate Yankees’ 5-game sweep of Bosox. Danielle didn’t feel well and had to go home early. We apologize.

MONDAY MORNING KENJI’S PIGEONS

August 21st, 2006 No comments

ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO KENJI RESCUED 2 BABY PIGEONS FROM MAIN STREET IN HUNTINGTON VILLAGE. HE NURSED THEM BACK TO HEALTH. NOW THEY ARE ON THERE OWN BUT STILL STAY OUT SIDE OUR SHOP. I THINK THAT IF THEY LEFT FOR GOOD WE WOULD ALL BE SO SAD. WE LOOK FOR THEM EVERY MORNING AND THEY MAKE US SMILE.

What secretly annoys florists most?

August 20th, 2006 No comments

Most florists are annoyed by a customer who can’t decide. While we can suggest what kind of arrangement is most appropriate for the occasion, we can’t “decide” it for you. It is your gift after all.

So before you call, please ask yourself the following questions.

  • Do I really want flowers?
  • What kind of arrangement do I want? – Vase, basket, any specific flowers? If roses, how many?
  • Where is it going?
  • How much do I want to spend? – Our minimum is $40 plus delivery ($8 local). There will be a local tax added onto it. If you pick up the flowers by yourself, there is no minimum.

Competition

August 19th, 2006 No comments

Every retail/wholesale florist probably knows that competition is becoming more and more fierce. The competition is coming from supermarkets, on-line “florists” (.com “florists”), direct shippers (ProFlowers), Costco, Wal-mart, Home depots, etc etc. They have already broken into the traditional market of wholesale-retail florists. They are not going away.

Many traditional florists, however, seem to have failed to adapt to this new reality. We can’t keep doing “business as usual” and hope to survive.

Who would buy flowers from a retail florist, if all they do is to sell “supermarket-grade” flowers for twice as much? I wouldn’t, would you?

ONE MORE GONE

August 18th, 2006 No comments

TODAY’S MAIL BROUGHT SOME VERY SAD NEWS. AFTER 55 YEARS ONE OF LONG ISLAND’S WHOLESALE FLORAL COMPANIES HAS DECIDED TO CLOSE IT’S DOORS. PATCHOGUE FLORAL DISTRIBUTORS HAS CALLED IT QUITS. IT’S JUST ONE MORE REMINDER OF HOW MUCH THIS BUSINESS HAS CHANGED AND HOW BIG BUSINESS HAS AFFECTED IT. SUPPLIES AND GOODS CAN BE BOUGHT FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY WITH THE PRESS OF A BUTTON. THE DAY OF THE FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS IS FADING FAST!! ESPECIALLY THIS ONE. EVERYONE FROM SUPERMARKETS TO CIGAR SHOPS SELL FLOWERS AND PLANTS. WHAT THEY DON’T SELL IS PERSONAL, FRIENDLY SERVICE. THERE ISN’T A FACE  ACROSS A COUNTER THAT YOU CAN RECOGNIZE OR A REAL PERSON AT THE OTHER END OF THE PHONE THAT YOU CAN HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH.

IT’S JUST SAD TO SEE. I COULD REALLY SAY ALOT MORE BUT UNFORTUNATELY YOU CAN’T REVERSE PROGRESS.

OUCH!

August 18th, 2006 No comments

So yesterday I had the brilliant idea to scrub the floor in the front of the store tile by tile with a toillet brush. I DO NOT recomend this activity….my back is killing me. Now I know what my mom must feel like when she cleans (she’s old….bending down gets her winded!).So now I can’t move…..guess I’ll just have to go home and go back to bed!…maybe I’ll take the pigeons with me…..hmmm

Danielle on “Newsday” !!!

August 17th, 2006 No comments

Someone from Newsday (Long Island newspaper) interviewed us about two weeks ago.  Here’s the Newsday article about us.  Well, not exactly about “us”, it was actually about the heatwave our area was experiencing at that time.  But they mentioned our store name and printed Danielle’s picture.  Now she is a Star of Long Island!

Pigeons

August 17th, 2006 No comments

About 10 days ago, I picked up two pigeon chicks.  They were just sitting on the busy Main Street.  Apparently, someone destroyed their nest on the tree.  Against all odds, I suceeded to keep them alive so far.  They became so big!  Within a few weeks, they should be able to fly.
